Authors are asked to make the data underlying their results available, and to include a data availability statement in every paper. Where data cannot be shared — commercial sensitivity, a client agreement on a real structure, safety or privacy — the statement must say so and give the reason.

We do not require open data as a condition of publication. Much civil engineering data belongs to a client, a contractor or a public authority rather than the author, and a requirement the discipline cannot meet would only produce false statements.
