Before you start — the three answers

Cost. Volume 1 is free. No submission fee, no publication fee, no page or colour charges. If a charge is ever introduced, the rate in force on the day you submit is the rate that applies to your paper — never the rate on the day it is accepted.

Time. Desk decision in 7 days. First decision in 6–8 weeks. Four weeks for your revision. Three to four weeks from acceptance to publication.

Rights. You keep copyright. We publish under CC BY 4.0 and take a licence, not ownership.

When it appears. We publish continuously: your article goes online as soon as it is ready after acceptance, with its own page and its own DOI, and is citable from that day. It is then placed in whichever issue is open. The journal runs one volume a year, beginning in March, in two issues about six months apart. Volume 1 is a short opening volume of a single issue; Volume 2 begins in March 2027 and the March-to-March pattern holds from then on. You do not wait for an issue to close — an article accepted in April is published in April, and the issue it belongs to is a label on it rather than a queue in front of it. A journal that holds finished work for months is making the author pay for its own schedule.

Is your paper in scope?

We publish across 13 clusters and 88 subject areas of civil engineering. Read the Scope page. Documented field applications and case studies are welcome as full research contributions, not as a lesser category.

Choose an article type

Word counts exclude the abstract, references, tables and figure captions. If your paper is 10% over, submit it and say why in the cover note; the handling editor decides.

Prepare two files — this is the part people get wrong

Review is double-anonymous, so:

File 1 — the manuscript. No author names. No affiliations. No acknowledgements. No funding statement. Refer to your own earlier work in the third person ("Kumar (2024) showed"), not as "our previous work". Remove identifying information from file properties.

File 2 — the title page, uploaded separately: title, all authors with affiliations and ORCIDs, the corresponding author's contact details, acknowledgements, and funding.

Structure

Abstract of 250 words or fewer, unstructured, with 4–6 keywords chosen from our subject areas where possible. Then the body as the work requires — we do not impose a fixed section pattern, because a field case study and an experimental study do not have the same shape.

Units are SI. Where you cite a standard, give its full designation and year (for example IS 2720 (Part 5): 1985), because a standard without a year is not a citation.

Figures, tables and data

Figures at 300 dpi or better, each with a caption that can be understood without the body text. Tables as editable text, never as images — an image of a table cannot be read by a screen reader or indexed. You must hold the rights to every figure you include, and where a figure is reproduced or adapted, written permission must be obtained and the source credited.

References

Any consistent style at submission — we do not reject on formatting, and we will not ask you to reformat a paper we have not yet accepted. Include a DOI wherever one exists. On acceptance we convert your references to the journal's style during copyediting.

Statements you must include

Placed on the title page so they do not break anonymity:

• Conflict of interest. All financial and non-financial interests. "None" is a valid answer and is published as such.
• Data availability. Where the underlying data is, or why it cannot be shared. Client-owned or safety-sensitive data is a legitimate reason — say so plainly.
• AI use. Any AI tool used in preparing the manuscript, naming the tool and what it did. This applies to every tool from every company, with no exception. You remain responsible for everything in your paper, including anything a tool produced.
• Funding.
• CRediT roles for each author.
• Authorship. By submitting, the corresponding author confirms every author meets all four ICMJE criteria and has approved the submission.

Submitting

Register on the journal, then five steps: article type and checklist, upload, metadata, confirm. About 15–20 minutes once your files are ready. You receive a submission ID by email immediately, and your fee status is shown on the confirmation.

After you submit

You can see the status at any time in your dashboard. If we return your submission because something is missing, it keeps its original submission date — our request must not cost you.

Decisions are accept, minor revisions, major revisions, or decline. You receive the full reviewer comments and the editor's letter in every case, including a decline. If reviewers disagree materially, a third is appointed before anything is decided.

If you disagree with a decision

You may appeal once, in writing, to the Editor-in-Chief, saying specifically what you believe was mistaken. It is decided by an editor who did not take the original decision. Disagreement with a reviewer's judgement is not itself grounds; a demonstrable error of fact, process or conflict is.

Preprints

Post one if you want to — before, during or after review. It is not prior publication and it has no bearing on our decision. The exception: work already formally published elsewhere, in a journal or as a proceedings paper of record, is prior publication and we will not consider it.

Sending us your paper

Submissions are handled in the journal's own system, where you create an account, upload your two files and follow the paper afterwards.

The journal is open to submissions. The founding editorial board is in place, the review process is configured, and papers are being accepted for Volume 1. A desk decision comes within seven days and a first decision in six to eight weeks. Volume 1 carries no charge of any kind.
