Volume 1 is free to publish in. No submission charge, no publication charge, no page or colour charges, no charge to read.

Volume 1 stays free even if a charge starts while it is still open. Two rules could have collided here — Volume 1 is free and the rate on your submission date applies — and the first one wins. Any article that appears in Volume 1 is free to its authors, whenever it was submitted and whatever we have announced in the meantime.

This is written down because an unresolved ambiguity in a fee promise is always read one way by the author and the other way by the publisher, and that is where disputes come from. Volume 1 is the promise that persuades people to send work to a journal with no history. It is not a promise we will find a reading of later.

If an article processing charge is introduced later:

  1. It will be announced at least two months before it takes effect.
  2. The rate in force on the date you submit is the rate that applies to your paper — not the rate on the date it is accepted. If you submit while publishing is free, your paper is free, however long review takes. Review time is ours to spend and must never cost you money.
  3. A revision keeps its original submission date. A paper declined and later resubmitted is a new submission on its new date.
  4. If we return your submission because something is missing, it keeps its original date.
  5. Your rate is shown on your submission confirmation.

What the charge covers. Where a charge applies, it funds the platform and hosting, DOI registration with Crossref, similarity screening, copyediting and typesetting, permanent archiving, and the editorial administration that keeps a submission moving. Avloryn Publications is a commercial publisher, and the charge also sustains the journals and the work of adding new ones.

It does not pay for peer review. Our reviewers and editorial board are not paid, as at essentially every journal including the largest commercial publishers. Reviewers give their time because their own work is reviewed on the same terms.

And it does not pay for a decision. Paying buys production and permanence. It does not buy acceptance, a faster review, or a kinder one.

Waivers. Where a charge applies and an author cannot meet it, a full or partial waiver may be requested at submission with a brief reason. The handling editor decides, and records the reason. A waiver request has no bearing on the editorial decision, and reviewers are never told one was made.
